Wither the US dollar now?
Article Abstract:
The US currency is suffering from severe undervaluation. The dollar traded for only 1.55 Deutschmark (DM) and 99.7 yen (Y) at the end of 1994, figures that dropped even further to DM1.345 in Mar. 1995 and to Y79.75 in April. However, purchase power parity calculations show that, theoretically, the correct trading levels for the greenback are DM1.95 per dollar, Y145 per dollar and $1.34 per pound sterling. The currency's weak performance and its inability to sustain a rally have been attributed to several factors. These include US inflationary concerns fueled by interest rate hikes, the trade conflict between the US and Japan, and the huge US budget and trade deficits. The dollar will only be able to make lasting recovery if fundamental structural problems are addressed, such as the 'twin deficits,' low US savings, Japanese trade surplus and deregulation of domestic markets.

World economic prospects 1987-88
Article Abstract:
The immediate prospects for the world economy are for continued modest growth and a modest increase in inflation. The problems that may have a potentially adverse affect on the world economy are trade imbalances, the possibility of protectionist laws being enacted by the industrialized nations, and increasing sovereign debts and budget deficits. International economic cooperation is needed to stabilize exchange rates and to resolve trade imbalances.
