The construction work, which has started in earnest on the first National Security Cutter, a frigate-sized patrol craft that will replace the Hamilton-class cutters is reported. The features and new capabilities of the cutter include the ability to launch and recover Bell Helicopter Eagle Eye vertical take-off, landing of unmanned vehicles, availability of two helicopter hangers, stern ramp for small boat launch and recovery, and incorporation of "optical manning", which will reduce crew size and yield cost savings.
