Working in a moving environment
Article Abstract:
A review of past research and theories on how and why performance could be affected by a moving environment is presented. According to them, performance could be impaired when particular human skills are negatively affected, such as when environmental motion lowers motivation, increases tiredness or creates balance problems. On task performance, the specific effects of moving environments can be anticipated through biomechanical effects on such skills as perception or motor skills. For purely cognitive tasks, motion has been found to have no significant effect on performance.

Working for peanuts
Article Abstract:
Industrial designer David Ryan chose to use his design training to create appropriate technologies that would help campesino farmers in Ecuador. Research into the people and their work habits revealed the need for small, portable tools for peanut de-vining and shelling. After the tools were developed, Ryan held workshops to teach the farmers to build the tools themselves using locally available materials. Ryan believes that an anthropological approach to design would allow designers to make positive contributions to society in any milieu.
