A new age dawns for energy markets: the opening up of the energy markets to alternative providers will bring benefits for users but means a period of upheaval as the battle for domestic market share gets underway
Article Abstract:
The introduction of alternative power sources means new entrants to energy markets and the start of competition. Offer and OfGas, the regulatory authorities promote competition which means change in the industries. There are still problems to resolve in the gas industry, now that there are more than 40 suppliers challenging British Gas, such as service requirements. Investors are sitting pretty: the outlook for investors remains good as cost-cutting and diversification by the old hands should more than compensate for loss of market share to newcomers
Article Abstract:
British Gas has been restructuring and reducing staff on a major scale to prepare itself for the new climate of competition. The benefits of such cuts will take some time to show in profit figures. PowerGen is also planning to cut staff numbers which is expected to compensate for loss of market share. The main driver of dividend growth at the generators or the Recs will be their balance sheets, especially high dividend cover.
