Your Institute - Your Service: What TSD Offers You
Article Abstract:
The Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales provides some services which are self-supporting. These are the Technical Services which are self- supporting. These are the Technical Services Department (TSD) and the Professional Development Services (PDS). After a move into the new Milton Keynes building, in early 1984, the departments have been able to cooperate and co-develop projects even more easily. Publications are the biggest activity of the TSD; they include books, guides, the 'Accountants' Digest' series, the 'Tax Digest' and 'Update' (a monthly newsletter). The Practice Advisory Service (PAS) now has two full-time consultants to advise management on such issues as practice acquisition, partnership agreements and retirement arrangements. Charges are commercially based. Chartac Recruitment Services has two main roles - counselling and employment agency-like job placing. The Interfirm Comparison (IFC) provides data for comparing the performance of practicing firms.

Putting TOPP class students into practice
Article Abstract:
The Institute of Chartered Accountants in Ireland (ICAI) created a pilot program in 1982 to see whether accountants could be trained outside public practice in industry and commerce. The training program offers trainees valuable exposure to areas outside of public practice, including management information and corporate finance, that gives trainees insight into the activities of industry and commerce. The program also offers people inside industry and commerce a chance to qualify as chartered accountants. Experience indicates that the success of an outside program is dependent on: careful advance planning by the ICAI and the sponsoring firm; careful selection of trainee; the secondment of trainees to practice; and the use of a discounted salary approach for trainees.
