Zipper locks unzipped
Article Abstract:
Plastic zippers were first produced in the US in 1952 by Minigrip, a manufacturer of plastic storage bags. There are currently two types of zipper-locking mechanisms or 'profiles', one featuring an asymmetrical arrow shape on one side which fits into a heart-shaped channel on the other. The second design has two sets of hooks which link together to form a seal. The technology is currently used mainly in the food industry.

The ongoing eruption in Montserrat
Article Abstract:
Eruptive activity of the Soufriere Hills volcano on the Caribbean island of Montserrat since 1995 has prompted the most intensive volcanology study ever. The Univ of the West Indies established the Montserrat Volcano Observatory. Instrumentation and effects of eruptions on the island are discussed.
