Analysis of compacted semiflexible polyanions visualized by atomic force microscopy: influence of chain stiffness on the morphologies of polyelectrolyte complexes.
Article Abstract:
Tapping mode atomic force microscopy followed by quantitative image analysis was used to investigate the morphologies of the compacted semiflexible biological polyanions alginate, acetan, circular plasmid DNA, and xanthan. It was observed that the compacted xanthan at room temperature displayed a number of racquets and other morphologies similar to the reported intermediate, metastable states by simulations.

Induced orientation of alpha-helical polypeptides in polyelectrolyte multilayers
Article Abstract:
Polyelectrolyte multilayers (PEMs) consisting of stiff polypeptides at texturized silicon substrates were examined. It was suggested that PEMs exposing charged alpha- helical polypeptides in the outermost layer could be used to create biomimetic and biosensor surfaces.
