The retail area of the agricultural product market experienced considerable consolidation throughout the 1990s decade. As a result, mergers and acquisitions have caused a number of well known dealerships and cooperatives to disappear while other players have moved into new, financially lucrative territory. Farmland Industries official Stan Riemann noted that agricultural product retailers will have to become elite service providers to farmers and food processors to survive.

Selling service selling success
Article Abstract:
Fertilizer distributor Myers Inc of Lexington, IL, has attributed its success to selling service. It has grown from a small dry and liquid nitrogen fertilizer facility to a company with more than $15 million in annual sales, and with seven locations employing 32 full-time workers. Myers currently handles dry, liquid and suspension fertilizers, anhydrous ammonia, agricultural chemicals and application limestone.
