Effect of cholesterol on the properties of phospholipid membranes. 4. Interatomic voids
Article Abstract:
The properties of the interatomic voids present in fully hydrated dimyristoylphosphatidylcholine (DMPC)-cholesterol mixed membranes of different compositions are analyzed in detail using a generalized variant of the Voronoi-Delaunay method on the basis of computer simulation results. The results obtained show that the empty space is organized in a more compact way, forming larger voids in the presence than in the absence of cholesterol.

Effect of cholesterol on the properties of phospholipid membranes. 2. free energy profile of small molecules
Article Abstract:
The effect of cholesterol on the properties of lipid membranes was investigated by computer simulations. It was found that cholesterol increases the amount of spherical cavities in the membrane region in which their OH group is located, and, hence, lowers the solvation of the free energy of the penetrants in this region.

Morphology of voids in molecular systems. A voronoi-delaunay analysis of a simulated DMPC membrane
Article Abstract:
A generalized version of the Voronoi-Delaunay method is used to study large intermolecular voids in a model of the hydrated DMPC bilayer, obtained from all-atom Monte Carlo simulation. A clear correlation between the orientation of the voids and the orientation of the lipid chains is observed.
