Formation of regular surface-supported mesostructures with periodicity controlled by chemical reaction rate
Article Abstract:
A low energy electron microscopic and X-ray photoemission electron microscopic (XPEEM) study of the formation of a variety of stationary two-dimensional metallic and oxygen structures in Au and Au + Pd adlayers on Rh(110) during water formation reaction is reported. This inherently nonequilibrium self-organization process, which is governed by the competition between kinetics and thermodynamics, could be controlled by choosing appropriate chemical reactions and by varying the reaction conditions and the coverage of the self-assembling species.

Synthesis and magnetic properties of silica-coated FePt nanocrystals
Article Abstract:
Colloidal FePt nanocrystals were synthesized and then were coated with silica shells. The silica shell limits magnetic dipole coupling between the FePt nanocrystals, however, low temperature and room temperature magnetization scans show slightly constricted hysteresis loops with coercivities that decrease systematically with decreased shell thickness, possibly resulting from differences in magnetic dipole coupling between particles.

Structural investigation of Pd(II) in concentrated nitric and perchloric acid solutions by XAFS
Article Abstract:
XAFS spectra of palladium(II) in concentrated HNO3/HClO4 acid mixtures are recorded and analyzed. The study confirmed the formation of Pd-nitrate complexes in concentrated HNO3 solutions.
