GERMANY: OUTLOOK FOR BASF COATINGS
Article Abstract:
German Munster-based BASF Coatings, Germany's biggest coatings producer, expects an unchanged turnover for year 2000. Sales are affected adversely by the development of the US and Brazilian currencies. In 1999 sales totalled just under EUR 2bn. Klaus Peter Lobbe, head of BASF Coatings, says that following a phase of concentration, the company is to seek growth both internally and through acquisitions and cooperation agreements. BASF Coatings, which already generates more than 50% of sales overseas, is setting hopes especially on the Asian market and the automotive industry there. Automotive OEM coatings contribute about 40% to BASF Coatings' turnover, while 25% is generated with automotive refinishes, 20% with industrial coatings in South America and 15% with architectural paints in South America. In 1999 BASF Coatings managed to strengthen its market position in all of its key product groups. Mr Lobbe reports an increase in sales in Europe and the Nafta region but a decline in South America due to exchange rate developments. Returns in the field of automotive OEM coatings improved but failed to meet the target. Profits from the refinishes sector declined but remained above the average of the market. Investment are named as the reason for the unsatisfactory returns of the industrial coatings division. In this segment the company is setting hopes on powder, coil, wood and plastic coatings. In the next five years BASF Coatings is to invest another EUR 340mn. The figure does not include acquisitions.
