GERMANY: REORGANISATION AT GREBE GROUP
Article Abstract:
The Grebe family is reorganising its group of paints and coatings companies. With effect from 1 August 2000, both the German and foreign companies of the group will be subject to the new joint-stock company Grebe Holding AG. The German companies of the group are - Schramm Coatings GmbH (formerly Schramm Lacke GmbH) of Offenbach; - Weilburger Coatings GmbH (formerly Weilburger Lackfabrik J. Grebe GmbH) of Weilburg; - Weilburger Graphics GmbH (formerly Weilburger Lackfabrik GmbH & Co KG) of Gerhardshofen. In 1999 the three companies contributed EUR 45mn, EUR 29.4mn and EUR 10.9mn, respectively, to the turnover of the group, which amounted to EUR 106mn. In the first half of 2000 turnover increased 12.4%. In 1999 subsidiaries in Italy, Spain, the UK, Hong Kong, Indonesia and Japan generated a turnover of EUR 22.7mn between them. Beside the key markets in Europe, the Grebe group is setting hopes on the Asian market, especially China, Japan and Indonesia. Where the group is not represented by subsidiaries it is seeking licence partnerships.

ISRAEL: DECLINE IN COATINGS MARKET
Article Abstract:
In 1998 Israel's 13 producers of paints and varnishes recorded a 8% fall in production to about 64,000 tonnes. In value terms, production declined from US$ 365mn to US$ 360mn. The biggest producer Tambour, which holds 55-60% of the market, reports a 22% fall in sales in 1998 and the first quarter of 1999. Meanwhile, imports decreased 2.4% to US$ 164.3mn and exports 24.4% to US$ 32.2mn. The fact that imports did better than domestic producers is explained with quality, prices and payment conditions. The Israeli industry's investment in 1998 amounted to US$ 4.5mn and served mainly the modernisation of mixing and filling machinery. Tambour is planning restructuring and rationalisation investments of US$ 8mn-10mn in new equipment and know-how. Another Israeli producer, Nir-let which specialises in architectural paints, aims to raise market share from 20% to 35% by year 2001. This is to be achieved by mergers and acquisitions, which include the takeover of Univercol, a producer of industrial coatings and paints.
