Growth kinetics of nanocrystalline ZnO particles from colloidal suspensions
Article Abstract:
The particle aging kinetics of synthetic zinc oxide particles in the nanometer size range were determined by monitoring the optical band edge absorption and by using the effective mass model to approximate the particle size as a function of time. The growth kinetics of the ZnO particles follow the Lifshitz-Slyozov-Wagner theory of Ostwald ripening. In this model, the higher curvature and hence chemical potential of smaller particles provides a driving force for dissolution. The larger particles continue to grow by diffusion-limited transport of species dissolved in solution.

Sol-gel synthesis and characterization of carbon/ceramic composite electrodes
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to analyze the sol-gel synthesis of carbon/ceramic composite electrodes with an interconnected network of carbon particles. Films of the silica-based gel featured pore sizes smaller than 1 micron. Experimental results indicated that the electrodes were porous and electrically conductive. Findings also showed that more than half of the carbon surface area was accessible electrochemically.
