Czech firm Vyzkumny Ustav Antibiotik a Biotransformacii (VUAB), which has 550 staff and a turnover of US$ 16.5mn (1997), has been acquired by ICN Pharmaceuticals of the USA. VUAB has a world market share of 10% for ephedrine and holds a patent for a technology to extract the substance from yeast cultures. The company also produces injectable antibiotics, infusion solutions and nyastine and has an export quota of about 50%. ICN is highly active in central and eastern Europe and already owns 11 companies with an added turnover of US$ 433mn in the region. *

The Seattle, US-based company Pathogenesis Corp is taking a just over 20% stake in its German distributor, Pulmopharm of Munich. The German company was set up in 1997.
