Monsanto Co. of St. Louis, MO, and American Home Products (AHP) of Madison, New Jersey's planned merger reflects the ongoing consolidation of the agricultural and biotechnology sectors, certain industry analysts believe. According to Sano Shimoda, president of industry analyst BioScience Securities of Orinda, CA, MOnsanto and AHP's merger will herald new mergers in the agricultural chemicals business. The company that will emerge from Monsanto and AHP's consolidation will generate around $23 billion in annual sales, according to Monsanto's estimates.

American Home Products (AHP), a pharmaceutical and consumer products company headquartered in Madison, NJ, has called of its proposed $33.6-billion merger with agrochemical and biotech firm Monsanto Co. AHP, parent company of American Cyanamid, is planned to be merged with the St. Louis, MO-based Monsanto to form establish a life sciences operation. The called-off merger, announced on Oct. 13, 1998, is approved by both firms' board of directors, the companies said. The deal could have made a new firm with an expected yearly profit of $3 billion.
