Investigating radio frequency plasmas used for the modification of polymer surfaces
Article Abstract:
The characteristics of a cold plasma that can be used for treating polymer surfaces were studied by utilizing Langmuir probes and energy-resolved mass spectrometry. A 13.56 MHz radio frequency excitation was furnished by an external coil. It was shown that a plasma of Ar gas is capacitively coupled to the source coil. The presence of a mass spectrometer was found to alter the plasma potential and change the level of rf fluctuation in the plasma and therefore influences the ion energy distribution function at the sample surface.

An in situ comparison between VUV photon and ion energy fluxes to polymer surfaces immersed in an RF plasma
Article Abstract:
Absolutely calibrated vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) spectroscopy was used to determine the energy fluxes of VUV photons at an electrically floating substrate in a low-pressure 13.56-MHz radiofrequency plasma reactor used for polymer surface treatments. Because of the low VUV absorption coefficient of polystyrene most of the photon flux penetrates through the outermost 2nm of the polymer surface without attenuation.

Kinetics and dynamics of dissolution/mixing of a high-viscosity liquid phase in a low-viscosity solvent phase
Article Abstract:
The kinetics and dynamics of mixing in the initially separated binary mixture of polystyrene/5CB liquid crystal and ternary mixtures of water/surfactant [C.sub.12][E.sub.5]/polymer (PEG) system are examined. Results suggest that the mixing process of domains of one phase in a matrix of the other phase is dependent on the viscosity inside the domains and in the matrix.
