Liquid structure of acetonitrile-water mixtures by x-ray diffraction and infrared spectroscopy
Article Abstract:
Cluster formation on acetonitrile-water mixtures have studied through x-ray diffraction over a wide range of acetonitrile mole fractions. Infrared spectroscopy has been performed on the O-D and C-N stretching bands of HDO and CH3CN to determine the nature of molecular association. Results show the dipole-dipole interaction between water and acetonitrile molecules plays an important role in mixing the two substances. Microheterogeneity is not present when acetonitrile molecules are replaced with water molecules into the hydrogen bond network of water.

Large-angle X-ray scattering and small-angle neutron scattering study on phase separation of acetonitrile-water mixtures by addition of NaCl
Article Abstract:
Phase separation of acetonitrile-water mixtures by addition of NaCl is studied on the molecular level by large-angle X-ray scattering (LAXS) and small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) methods. A phase diagram of acetonitrile-water-NaCl mixtures at 298 K has shown that phase separation occurs over a wide range of acetonitrile mole fraction (x [sub AN]) of ~0.1 User Contributions: Comment about this article or add new information about this topic: Article Abstract: Infrared (IR) spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction measurements are performed at 298 K on mixtures of N, N-dimethylacetamide and water over the entire range of DMA mole fraction. The results suggested that hydrogen bonding between the C=O group and the water molecules, and structural changes of predominant solvent clusters were taking place at these specific mole fractions.
