Local electrostatic field induced by the carotenoid bound to the reaction center of the purple photosynthetic bacterium Rhodobacter sphaeroidesLocal electrostatic field induced by the carotenoid bound to the reaction center of the purple photosynthetic bacterium Rhodobacter sphaeroides
Article Abstract:
The effect of carotenoid (Car) on the electrostatic environment of the RCs of the purple bacterium Rhodobacter (Rb.) sphaeroides was investigated, by recording electroabsorption (EA) spectra in the region of the reaction center (RC) Q(sub y) absorption bands of bacteriochlorophyll (Bchl) and bacteriopheophytin. Although there were no differences observed between the absorption and EA spectra of R26.1-RC and R26.1-RC+Car at 79K, significant differences were detected between their EA spectra at 293 K.

Transient EPR and absorption studies of carotenoid triplet formation in purple bacterial antenna complexes
Article Abstract:
The dynamics of triplet excited states in light harvesting complexes from a range of different purple bacteria is investigated by time-resolved EPR and optical absorption spectroscopy. The observed temperature dependence of the triplet energy transfer from bacteriochlorophylls to carotenoids is discussed in terms of the distance difference between the carotenoid and the two inequivalent bacteriochlorophyll molecules.

Pump-deplete-probe spectroscopy and the puzzle of carotenoid dark states
Article Abstract:
The source of recently noted ephemeral features is studied by applying the pump-deplete-probe and ephemeral absorption spectroscopy. The depletion pulse pumps the transient near IR-band, whose existence is similar to fluorescence, and is therefore related to the S(sub2) state.
