Novel method for the synthesis of hydrophobic Pt-Ru nanoparticles and its application to preparing a Nafion-free anode for the direct methanol fuel cell
Article Abstract:
A new microemulsion process is introduced to synthesize a hydrophobic unsupported Pt-Ru bimetallic catalyst, which can be dispersed very well in organic phase without agglomeration. The diffraction pattern of X-ray has indicated that in the new catalyst, Ru atoms are incorporated into the Pt fcc structure and with appropriate drying and acetone immersion to partially remove the protecting layer, the hydrophobic Pt-Ru colloid can absorb on the carbon paper without the need for Nafion binder.

Pt-Ru supported on double-walled carbon nanotubes as high-performance anode catalysts for direct methanol fuel cells
Article Abstract:
Pt-Ru supported on carbon nanotubes (single-walled nanotubes, double-walled nanotubes (DWNTs) and multi-walled nanotubes) catalysts are prepared by an ethylene glycol reduction method. The Pt-Ru/DWNTs catalyst shows the highest specific activity for methanol oxidation reaction in rotating disk electrode experiments and the highest performance as an anode catalyst in direct methanol fuel cell single cell tests.
