Novel synthesis pathway of ZnO nanoparticles from the spontaneous hydrolysis of zinc carboxylate salts
Article Abstract:
A new, clean, reproducible and direct method to synthesize zinc oxide nanoparticles with narrow size distribution by simple dissolution of a zinc carboxylate salt (acetate or cyclohexanebutyrate) in a polar basic aprotic solvent as dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) or N,N'-dimethylformamide (DMF) is reported. Experimental results demonstrate unambiguously that the cyclohexanebutyrate anion acts as a more effective capping agent than acetate. HR-TEM studies confirm the coexistence of ZnO nanocrystals with wurzite and rock salt structures.

Binding and hydrolysis of ampicillin in the active site of a zinc lactamase
Article Abstract:
The binding and hydrolysis of ampicillin are described in a model active site derived from dinuclear B. fragilis zinc lactamase. This study provides insight into a wider variety of antibiotic docking and shows that more than one reaction path is possible within the highly ionic active site of a bimetallic lactamase.
