Phospholipid bilayer free volume analysis employing the thermal ring-closing reaction of merocyanine molecular switches

Article Abstract:

A study determined the free volume properties of phospholipid bilayers using a new assay that applies the photochromic and solvatochromic properties of merocyanines. Computational studies revealed that alkyl chain unsaturation and gauche conformations result in enhanced free volume, while branching in the alkyl chains and the presence of cholesterol reduce the available free volume.

Mediation of ultrafast light-harvesting by a central dimer in phycoerythrin 545 studied by transient absorption and global analysis

Article Abstract:

Ultrafast femtosecond transient absorption measurements of energy-transfer dynamics for the antenna protein phycoerythrin 545,PE545, isolated from a unicellular cryptophyte Rhodomonas CS24 is reported. The phycoerythrobilins are excited at both 485 and 530 nm, and the spectral response is probed between 400 and 700 nm.

Light-induced equilibration kinetics in membrane-bound photosynthetic reaction centers: nonlinear dynamic effects in multiple scattering media

Article Abstract:

Nonequilibrium dynamic effects in membrane-bound reaction centers (RCs) from photosynthetic bacteria are studied. It is shown that the accumulation of slow conformational changes triggered by charge separation events in the RCs control system dynamics.
