Photochemical phase-transition behavior of polymer liquid crystals induced by photochemical reaction of azobenzenes with strong donor-acceptor pairs
Article Abstract:
A study was undertaken to demonstrate the photochemical nematic-isotropic (N-I) and the thermal I-N phase transition behaviors of polymer liquid crystals (LC) possessing azobenzene moieties with strong-donor acceptor pairs. Time-resolved measurements were performed to determine the photochemical phase transition of the polymer LCs. Results revealed that the photochemical N-I and the thermal I-N phase transitions were induced repeatedly by laser pulse radiation. The azobenzene threshold concentration was present in the photochemical phase transition of the polymer LCs.

Phase-type gratings formed by photochemical phase transition of polymer azobenzene liquid crystal. 2. Rapid switching of diffraction beams in thin films
Article Abstract:
Periodic induction of photochemical nematic-to-isotropic phase transition was used for examining the dynamic holographic gratings having thin films of polymer azobenzene liquid crystals. Results suggest that the holographic gratings could be formed due to the photochemical reactions of azobenzene moieties and photochemical phase transition in bright fringes of the interference pattern and the diffraction beams could be switched dynamically without significant fatigue by turning on and off the writing beams.

Photochemical modulation of color and transmittance in chiral nematic liquid crystal containing an azobenzene as a photosensitive chromophore
Article Abstract:
All-optical switching of selectivity reflected colors based on isomerization of an azobenzene (Azo) and subsequent change in transmittance was investigated in cholesteric liquid crystals (LCs), which reflect light in the visible region. A remarkable change in transmittance was observed when a probe light measured the photoinduced change in colors with the same handedness as the helical sense of the cholesteric LCs.
