Localization of residual water in alkali-metal and cation-exchanged X and Y type zeolites

Issues concerning the use of Fourier analysis of the powder patterns of X-rays combined with Rietveld refinement to describe the arrangements of alkali-metal and residual water cations in zeolites X and Y are presented.

Quantum chemical calculations and experimental evidence for O-bonding of carbon monoxide to alkali metal cations in zeolites
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to investigate the O-bonding of carbon monoxide to alkali metals cations in zeolites. Quantum chemical calculations and experimental findings show that interaction of carbon monoxide with single alkali metal cations is triggered by the proximity of their corresponding energy levels. It was also observed that O-bonding of carbon monoxide with one or two naked cations result in the weakening of the bands occurring in the IR spectra of the zeolites.

Investigation of copper carbonyl species formed upon CO adsorption on copper-exchange zeolites by diffuse reflectance FTIR
Article Abstract:
Aqueous ion-exchanged CuZSM-5, CuM, CuY, CuL zeolites were exposed to carbon and the resulting reaction was analyzed using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The zeolites were autoreduced in vacuo at 673 K and on the Cu(I)Y zeolite prepared by the solid-state ion exchange between CuCl and NH4Y measured over a wide spectral range. When the carbon pressure was increased, dicarbonyl species were formed on CuZSM-5, CuM, and CuY. These reactions have produced Cu(I) cations that have low electron donor-acceptor ability. These cations were found to form monocarbonyl species that have the lowest frequency of Cu(I)-C bond stretching vibration that range from 390-420 cm super -1.
