N2- radical anion reversibly formed at the surface of 'electron-rich' alkaline-earth oxides

A new study provides evidence for the first observation of the adsorption of the N2- radical anion on an oxide surface, itself formed directly by nitrogen adsorption.

Reductive activation of the nitrogen molecule at the surface of 'Electron-Rich' MgO and CaO. The N(sub 2)(super -) surface adsorbed radical ion
Article Abstract:
The 11-electron N(sub 2)(super -) radical anion so formed is detected by electron paramagnetic resonance for N(sub 2) and (super 15)N(sub 2). The electron transfer is reversible and N(sub 2) molecules desorb generating the original F(sub S)(super +) center when the pressure is lowered or temperature is increased.

Surface defect sites formed on partially and fully dehydrated MgO: an EPR/ENDOR study
Article Abstract:
Electron paramagnetic resonance and electron nuclear double resonance spectroscopies were used in examining defect sites on the surface of polycrystalline MgO at the temperature range 673 to 1123 K. MgO was dehydrated under vacuum and subjected to ultraviolet radiation under H2. Surface anion vacancies, which act as excess electron traps or color centers, are formed as a result of the dehydration process. Type I color centers are observed at higher temperatures while type II centers are prevalent at lower activation temperatures.
