SOUTH AFRICA: MERCK TAKES OVER SAARCHEM DIVISION

With effect from the beginning of July 1999, South African Honeydew-based Saarchem (Pty) Ltd, which is part of Chemical Services Ltd of Johannesburg, has sold its laboratory reagents business to Merck (Pty) Ltd. The division will be merged with the laboratory business of the German chemicals group, which generated a turnover of DM 43.7mn in South Africa in 1998. That of Saarchem amounted to DM 8.2mn.

US: LONZA BOOSTS CUSTOM SYNTHESIS CAPACITY
Article Abstract:
Lonza of Basle, Switzerland, has invested US$ 35mn in two new multipurpose reactor lines at its Riverside, Pennsylvania facility and improved the research and development and quality assurance laboratories there. The 11th and 12th reactors raise the capacity of the plant by 45 cu.m to 135 cu.m of intermediate products and active agents for pharmaceuticals produced according to cGMP criteria.

SWITZERLAND/US: PROCESS ADDITIVE COOPERATION

Ciba Spezialitatenchemie AG (Ciba Speciality Chemicals) of Basle, Switzerland and Nalco/Exxon Energy Chemicals L.P. have agreed upon cooperation in the marketing of specialist chemicals for the process industry and refineries.
