Sonochemical degradation of alkylbenzene sulfonate surfactants in aqueous mixtures
Article Abstract:
The degradation on nonvolatile surfactants sodium 4-cotylbenzene sulfonate (OBS) and dodecylbenzenesulfonate (DBS) and a nonvolatile nonsurfactant 4-ethylbenzene sulfonic acid (EBS), as single components and binary mixtures, were studied under 354 kHz ultrasound. Results indicated that in mixtures of the surfactant OBS and nonsurfactant EBS, the surfactant is selectively degraded, and that the reduced degradation of EBS is dependent on the mixed molar ratio of EBS/OBS.

Effects of pulsed ultrasound on the adsorption of n-alkyl anionic surfactants at the gas/solution interface of cavitation bubbles
Article Abstract:
The study focuses on the effects of the pulsed, as well as continuous wave (CW) ultrasound on the adsorption of various n-alkyl anionic surfactants at the gas and solution interface of the cavitation bubbles at several different ultrasonic frequencies. The results reveal that the accumulation of the surfactants at the interface depends on both the equilibrium, as well as the dynamic adsorption properties, as the effect is also highly dependant on the frequency.

Degradation of alkylbenzene sulfonate surfactants by pulsed ultrasound
Article Abstract:
The application of pulsed ultrasound for the degradation of the nonvolatile surfactants sodium 4-octylbenzene sulfonate (OBS) and sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate (DBS) is investigated at a frequency of 354 kHz. The observed pulse enhancements are found to be dependent on the pulse length, pulse ratio, initial concentration and surface activity of the surfactants.
