State-selective laser photochemistry of formaldehyde on Ag(111)
Article Abstract:
The state- and energy-distributions of the gas-phase products which are by-products of ultraviolet (UV) photoinduced polymerization of formaldehyde on Ag(111) have been measured using state-selective (VUV + UV) resonant multiphoton ionization. The UV gas-phase photolysis generates H and HCO radicals along with H2 and CO molecules. Results show the formaldehyde monomer is desorbed at 355 and 266 nm using nonresonant VUV ionization. These molecules exhibit non-Boltzmann velocity distributions with average translational energies that are higher than the surface temperature.

Study of the partial oxidation of methanol to formaldehyde on a polycrystalline Ag foil
Article Abstract:
A reactivity study of the partial oxidation of methanol to fromaldehyde using an oxygen-loaded Ag-membrane is presented, demonstrating the utility of the Ag-membrane reactor for obtaining product branching ratios and formation rates under steady-state and collision-free conditions. In case of hydrogenation and dehydrogenation reactions, an increase in reactivity was observed on hydrogen permeable membranes.

Methanol dehydrogenation and formation of carbonaceous overlayers on Pd (III) studied by high-pressure SFG and XPS spectroscopy
Article Abstract:
The decomposition of methanol on Pd(III) at 300 and 400 K was studied in situ from 5 x 10 (super -7) to o.1 mbar by combining vibrational sum frequency generation and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. To produce CO and H2 from CH3OH on Pd catalysts, the CHx formation must be suppressed or CHx must be selectively removed/oxidized without total oxidation of methanol.
