Surface modification of TiO2 nanoparticles with carotenoids. EPR study
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to analyze the role of carotenoids in photoinduced processes at the carotenoid/TiO2 interface. Electron paramagnetic resonance and ultraviolet-visible studies of titanium dioxide particles were carried out. The particles were modified with various carotenoids, including two containing terminal -CO2H groups. In addition, the photoreduction of acceptor molecules was discussed.

Density functional theory study of the [beta]-carotene radical cation and deprotonated radicals
Article Abstract:
The [beta]-carotene radical cation and deprotonated neutral radicals were studied at the density functional theory (DFT) level using different density functionals and basis sets. It was found that the deprotonation of the [beta]-carotene radical cation at the 5-methyl group produces the most stable radical because of retention of the [pi]-conjugation system.
