Synthesis and characterization of a size series of extremely small thiol-stabilized CdSe nanocrystals
Article Abstract:
The synthesis of thiol-capped crystalline CdSe nanoparticles in aqueous solution using mercaptoalcohols and mercapto acids as stabilizers has been undertaken. The CdSe nanoparticles were synthesized by adding NaHSe solutions to N2-saturated Cd(ClO4)2*6H2O solutions at pH 11.2 in the presence of the thiol stabilizers. The particle size was determined by the type of stabilizer and by the postpreparative size-selective precipitation. The particles were observed to be in the size quantization regime as compared with bulk CdSe. Second electronic transitions were also resolved for the smallest nanoparticles.

Electroluminescence studies on self-assembled films of PPV and CdSe nanoparticles
Article Abstract:
Optical spectroscopy and X-ray reflectivity studies showed that the self-assembly method can successfully incorporate CdSe nanoparticles and poly(p-phenylene vinylene) (PPV) into homogenous ultrathin films. Electroluminescence studies revealed that CdSE particles are oxidized and pure PSS/PPV*n film devices emit short-lived green light if operated in ambient air. Results from the electrooptical and electroluminescence suggested that PPV in the CdSe/PPV*n film device serves as a charge-transportation layer rather than an emitting layer.

Ellipsometric chain length dependence of fatty acid Langmuir monolayers. A heads-and-tails model
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to analyze Langmuir monolayers of even n-fatty acids with increasing number of carbon atoms in the hydrocarbon chain on 1x10(super -2)M HCl aqueous subsolutions. Brewster angle ellipsometry was utilized to carry out the analysis. The monolayers were then spread as 1mM chloroform solutions on aqueous substrates. Results indicated that headgroups contribute to the optical properties of Langmuir monolayers.
