The dependence of scanning tunneling microscope topography of carboxylates on their terminal groups
Article Abstract:
The scanning tunneling microscope (STM) topography of substituted carboxylates (RCOO(super -)) are examined with different terminal groups R systematically substituted in the range of H, CH3, CF3, (CH3)3C, and HC triplebond C. It is concluded that the carboxylates terminated with six different alkyl groups were chemisorbed on the atomically flat surface of rutile TiO2 and visualized by STM.

An ordered retinoate monolayer prepared on rutile TiO2(110)
Article Abstract:
An all-trans retinoate ion monolayer has been prepared by a substitution reaction of all-trans retinoic acid wit trimethyl acetate ion adsorbed on rutile TiO2 (110) in solutions. The scanning tunneling microscopy observation showed that no lateral order of retinoate existed on the monolayer.

Single-molecule analysis by noncontact atomic force microscopy
Article Abstract:
High-resolution sensing of a wide range of materials is carried out by atomic force microscopy operated in noncontact mode (NC-FAM), regardless of their conductivity. The feasibility of the method in single-molecule analysis is presented for acetate and formate.
