Using energy landscapes to predict the properties of thin films
Article Abstract:
The way in which the dimensions of the film and the interactions between the film and the substrates impact the equilibrium phase diagram and the ideal glass transition is explored. It suggests the way the intrinsic mechanical properties of thin-film glasses derive from the physical dimensions of the sample, the interactions between the film and the substrates, and the balance between internal cohesive and packing forces.

Vibrational spectroscopy study of H2O on Pd/MgO(100) films
Article Abstract:
A study of water on Pd/MgO(100) films prepared in situ upon Mo(100) single crystals is performed by using low-energy electron diffraction, high-resolution electron energy-loss spectroscopy, and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy in an ultrahigh vacuum system. The results show that the adsorption of water on MgO(100) films surfaces is enhanced significantly owing to the presence of Pd particles.

Magnetically driven growth of anthracene thin films by organic molecular beam deposition
Article Abstract:
The influence of magnetic field on the surface morphology and on the structure of the films is investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and polarized optical transmission spectroscopy. A very good agreement between the results of optical spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, and predictions made on the basis of the anistropic magnetic susceptibility of anthracene is found.
