A genie comes out of Alladin's bottle
Article Abstract:
Pinnacle Systems' $5,990 GeniePlus is a PCI-card implementation of a 3D digital-video effects (DVE) switcher that can be controlled by any linear or nonlinear computer-based editing system. GeniePlus provides real time transitions that are helpful for compressing movies for CD-ROM and the Web. GeniePlus features a 32-bit, broadcast-quality title generator named Inscriber CG. GeniePlus also features a three-level Genie key which separates two video sources with a graphic or a title. Pinnacle recommends that an auxiliary fan be added to each PC running GeniePlus to combat the substantial heat generated by the two full-length PCI cards, which are mounted together into one PCI slot. GeniePlus runs under Windows NT and Windows 95 exclusively. GeniePlus is connected to analog decks using standard video and S-video cables. GeniePlus enlists the Movie-2 bus, a card connector able to pass eight digital-video signals between cards, to connect to a nonlinear editor.

Mac still king of nonlinear video
Article Abstract:
Data Translation's $8,995 Media 100 2.0 is a Mac-based video editing system that produces good image quality and sharp details. It offers four tracks of digital audio that can be played through two channels in real time without rendering. The editing interface is easy to learn, and clips can be dragged and dropped into the timeline for quick storyboarding. Avid Technology's $7,995 Media Suite Pro 3.1 is another similar system, which in previous versions was dependent on the slower Quadra 950. A three-board Power Mac version is becoming available with higher image quality. The interface is attractive and precise, and it includes a very high quality tutorial. Radius' $15,845 Telecast 1.0 includes the Premiere editing system and can produce professional video. It includes more professional feature than the others, and is natively QuickTime compatible. Truevision's $5,495 Targa 2000 NuBus 1.0 offers excellent video output and audio digitizing features.
