A tough act to follow
Article Abstract:
Sceptre's $3,995 Soundx 5500 is a powerful notebook computer equipped with a 233MHz Pentium processor with MMX, 48MB of RAM expandable to 144Mb, a 3GB hard drive, a 13.1-inch XGA display and a lithium-ion battery. It weighs 6.4 pounds with its CD-ROM drive installed, but is slightly bulky at 11.77 by 9.21 inches due to its large screen and roomy, comfortable keyboard. The system can easily replace a desktop; the screen is very crisp and clear, offering top-notch video performance, and the 3GB hard disk can accommodate large video and audio files. Sceptre positions the Soundx as a multimedia notebook, but its onboard speakers are barely adequate. Dell's newest Inspiron model is a virtual twin of the Soundx but uses a different screen and is more expensive. Dell offers the better reputation and service record of the two, but the Sceptre may be a better buy for some users.

Buying mail-order: let your fingers do the shopping
Article Abstract:
Purchasing computer equipment online can offer shoppers a variety of benefits, including lower price and greater selection, but many potential customers remain hesitant about purchasing computer supplies over the Internet. Online computer purchasing provides users in remote areas with greater access to a wider array of product types, and the convenience of shopping from your home or office is attracting a larger number of online consumers. Online mail-order computer warehouses frequently offer greater values and discounts to customers than retail computer superstores, and the sales employees at such online centers generally posses a greater degree of technological expertise. Further, most online purchases are exempt from state sales tax.
