Digital printing figures in smart card market
Article Abstract:
The digital card printer market is projected to grow as the number of plastic smart cards printed on digital color printers expandx from from 4% of all cards in 1997 to around 10% in 2002. The market is divided into two categories: the desktop models using thermal transfer or dye sublimation technologies, and the high-speed presses which employ thermal transfer, dye-sublimation or electophotography. Global sales of desktop models and high-pressed are projected to reach 28,000 units and 190 units in 2002, respectively.

Scanner engineers begin addressing trends for multiple-function designs

Business equipment manufacturers are introducing innovative, multi- function scanners aimed at cost-cutting companies. Innovations include scanners that link directly to the printer and equipped with copying functions. Examples of these are the SC-100 from QMS Inc and Image Desk from Microtek International Inc. Other models double as document feeders, such as the OptraImage 15 scanner from Lexmark Corp.
