Alternatives in Wide-Area Network Services
Article Abstract:
Frank Greisinger gives advice on determining how AT&T long- distance cost-per-minute charges compare with resale carriers or other common carriers (OCCs) such as ITT and Western Union Corp., especially for direct dialing. Advantages of these alternate systems include more circuitry, discounts for off-periods, and special network services. MCI's dedicated Network Service charges $85 monthly circuit rental, $120 for each circuit installation plus a $50 order charge. GTE offers Direct Sprint, and Satellite Business Systems offers Communications Network Service. AT&T WATS lines, if used efficiently, may cost less. Problems with sound clarity and access to a limited number of destinations are among the disadvantages described. Practices for protection against abuse are among the suggestions for economizing. The services of five resale carriers are described. A chart comparing week-day rates between OCC, resale, and AT&T rates between New York and Los Angeles is shown.

The Network As a Corporate Resource
Article Abstract:
Networks are rapidly becoming indispensable for business operations. Coordinated planning, which includes a corporate strategy, utilization of current equipment, integration of systems, training programs and continual modernization, are musts when building an information network. An effective network should be able to obtain, assemble and distribute information in an efficient manner. Existing equipment, particularly word processors, electronic typewriters and small computers can be integrated into the network. Some businesses are approaching networking with a cautious attitude, linking up to mainframe computers as temporary solutions. A loss of security or privacy and cabling present two drawbacks. Although networking will save money in the long run, businesses must be prepared to allocate large cash outlays during the infancy.
