Compaq's Armada 7710MT portable computer offers sufficient power and reliability in both remote and office situations. Armada 7710MT, introduced in Jun 1997 draws attention to its larger-than-average size. It measures 12.6-by-9.5-by-2.0 inches and weighs 7.9 pounds. Included are a 150MHz Pentium/MMX chip, 16MB of RAM and a 12.1-inch active matrix screen. RAM can be expanded to a maximum 144MB. Armada 7710T marks the first of Compaq's desktop replacement system range. Compaq maintains its keyboard reputation with a comfortable 101-key presentation that includes four keys capable of calling up the Windows 95 menu. An optional 8x CD-ROM drive combines with internal speakers and an excellent sound system to provide sufficient speed for most applications. The Armada 7710T performs well in several remote areas, and surprises with its handling of the docking station. Armada 7710T's price is $4,299 plus an $849 docking station.

WinBook's $3,599 WinBook XL receives the highest score of eight Pentium-based notebook evaluations. The product features a 233MHz Pentium MMX CPU, 256K of L2 cache, 32MB of RAM, a 3GB hard disk drive, a 20x CD-ROM drive and a 13.3-in active matrix display. Users can also purchase an optional 56K internal fax modem for $159. The WinBook has two Universal Serial Bus (USB) ports, as well as the usual array of ports. ARM Computer's $4,199 ARMNote TM also scores well, featuring a Mobile 233MHz Pentium MMX processor, 512K of pipeline-burst secondary cache, 48MB of RAM, a 13.3-in monitor and a 20x CD-ROM drive. The product features one USB ports and a PC Card slot that accepts one Type II card or two Type II cards. Compaq's $4,999 Armada 7770 ships with a 150MHx Pentium MMX CPU, 16MB of RAM and a 1.6GB hard disk.

Compaq Presario 1080

The Compaq Presario 1080 is a fine Pentium-based notebook whose only deficit is 88-key keyboard with a too-short space bar and a touch-pad that can easily be struck by accident. The left side of the Presario 1080 tends to run warm. A$4,499 configuration features an MMX-enabled 166MHz Pentium processor, 16MB of expandable RAM, 1.44GB hard disk, PC Card slot, lithium-ion battery, 16-bit stereo sound and 10-speed CD-ROM drive, which can play even when the lid is closed. The built-in microphone has full-duplex speakerphone capability. The 12.1-in active-matrix screen has a resolution of 800 by 600 pixels. No optional docking station is available. The Presario 1080 comes with serial, parallel, mouse/keyboard and joystick ports.
