Cursor Controls for 'Hands-Off' Work
Article Abstract:
'Handless' cursor control devices designed to increase productivity by allowing users to operate computers with one hand are becoming available. Footmouse (shown in a photograph) from Versatron ($225) is a foot-operated cursor control device compatible with the IBM PC. Footmouse plugs in between the keyboard and computer; it works by interfacing the keyboard with the computer's CPU and emulates the cursor functions of the key board. Torrington (Torrington, Connecticut) is producing prototypes of its independent suspension system computer mouse designed to increase the speed and ease of its operation with software programs, including graphics and window programs. Two of the software programs the Torrington product can be used with are TopView (IBM) window manager and GEM graphics manager (Digital Research). The product has RS 232 compatibility and 100 counts per inch. The NOD cursor control device (Stride Micro, $400) allows the user to manipulate the cursor with simple head movements by attaching a small piece of reflective material to the head in a visible area. NOD is compatible with computers accepting standard RS 232 inputs; and can be used in CAD-CAM and process control applications.
