Digital cameras are already being marketed for professional use and are expected to see a growing market appeal due to the equipment's broad potentials for digital photography and other image markets in the future. The growing interest in multimedia systems, as well as the increasing number of personal computer users should boost global digital camera sales to 8 million in 2000, from the current 2 million units, according analysts. Digital cameras are expected to gain continued dominance over other consumer products following the release of 'mega-pixel' digital still cameras that provide image resolutions at 1 million pixels or more.

The digital camera industry is seeing the entry of more models with 800,000 to 1 million pixels and digital cameras with over 1 million pixels are also beginning to break into the market. At the current rate, it is expected that products with 2-million-pixel CCDs may be introduced by the end of 1998. However, manufacturers are more focused on producing digital cameras with around 350,000 pixels as they are more favored in the market because they are more affordable as compared with those in the 810,000-pixel range.
