Compaq Armada 1520DM: riding the tide of falling prices
Article Abstract:
Compaq's $2,199 Armada 1520DM Pentium-based notebook offers a complete range of relatively sophisticated technological specifications, but upgrading several of the notebook's weakest features can raise the price significantly. The 1520DM includes a 1.3GB hard drive, an integral 10x CD-ROM drive, a 133MHz Pentium CPU, a floppy drive, 16MB of EDO RAM, 256KB of Level 2 cache and a 33.6-Kbps data/fax modem. The keyboard is solidly constructed, the majority of keys are standard size and the unit houses an integrated microphone. The 1520DM includes pre-installed versions of Windows 95 or Windows NT 4.0, a rear AC-adapter jack and a lithium-ion battery that provides four hours of use. However, the 11.3-in dual scan display is largely inferior to competing screens, failing to render text, images and colors with necessary clarity.

Transmonde Vibrant 166Tmx
Article Abstract:
Transmonde Technologies' $3,589 Vibrant 166Tmx notebook is based on a 166MHz Pentium MMX processor and includes 48MB of RAM, a 2.1GB hard drive, a 33.6 internal fax modem, an 8x CD-ROM drive and a 12.1-inch active matrix. A mini-docking station is available. This midrange portable is targeted for a variety of users, from business to small office and home users. The company will build systems to order. The screen supports 64,000 colors and provides 800x600 resolution. The keyboard is the only flaw in the system; functions can be accidentally invoked and records lost as a result. The two lithium-ion batteries provide about an hour's use, although the company claims one hour and forty-five minutes.
