Compelling content for wired women
Article Abstract:
The market for Web sites oriented to women is growing quickly. One site striving to meet women's needs is Women.com, another is iVillage.com. Women.com began in 1992 as a BBS, and is striving to be the established leader in Web content for women. Its 12 URLs include HealthyIdea.com and Women's Wire. iVillage.com was originally geared toward babyboomers; when the company realized that 80% of its audience were women, it began, along with its advertisers, to focus more heavily on women. One way iVillage generates content is through its Parent Soup, which offers chat rooms for expectant parents, on up to parents of teens. While iVillage and Women.com both receive sponsorships and have several advertisers, neither company has yet to make a profit.

MSN isn't just another pretty face
Article Abstract:
The Microsoft Network (MSN) is more than an online service with a well-designed interface, though it is at least that. The interface features crisp, clean lines and was created by Clement Mok Designs of San Francisco. Designers wanted to ensure that there was a consistent look and feel with Microsoft Windows 95, yet another dimension that showed Microsoft's corporate image as well. Graphics for MSN was completed in four weeks and was put in the size of a 10K file. Designers needed to experiment with it extensively over the Internet to ensure it worked as designed. Color issues involved choosing the correct 256 combination to enable reliable colors with just 16-color capability.
