Eyeing promise of 2-digit gains, Japanese outfits dive into handheld computer market

Hand-held personal computers have become a favorite product among electronics enthusiasts in Japan, particularly after the release of a Japanese version of Microsoft Windows CE v2.0. Manufacturers who have taken advantage of this trend include Hitachi Ltd., which produced the Persona HPW-203JC, and NEC Corp., which launched the Mobile Gear II MC-R510. Hand-held computer terminals are expected to post a record demand of 750,000 units in the FY ended Mar 1998.

Mitsubishi Corp. has developed the Pedion Series of notebook computers and the AMiTY Series of portable pen computers. The Pedion products feature a MMX 233MHz Mobile Pentium CPU, a 1GB hard drive, a 64MB RAM and a 12.1 in thin-film transistor LCD monitor. The AMiTY products is compatible with Windows95 and offers a 100MHz Intel 486DX4 processor, a 32MB RAM and a 7.5 in dual super-twisted nematic color LCD monitor.
