From Breezeways to Gas Stations, Video Software Is Anybody's Game
Article Abstract:
The video software industry is in the midst of a frenzied growth period. According to the Fairfield Group, video tape sales to retailers jumped from 5.5 million in 1981 to a projected twenty-two million in 1985. In 1983, video tape sales totaled one billion dollars. That figure soared to $2.5 billion in 1985. The video software industry is no longer the sole province of the video specialist. The majority of the 15,000 video software dealers are either multiple outlets or franchises. Video software can be found more often in the largest retail chains, but it seems any merchant with spare floor space will soon be vending videos. Rentals continued to outpace sales in 1984. Whether or not this trend will continue is discussed. Photographs of two sample video dealer displays are included.
