Gateway 2000 Solo 2300: your junior corporate partner?

The Gateway 2000 Solo 2300 notebook computer, which costs $3,499, can be built to meet the customer's budget and needs. Options include 120MHz or 133MHz Pentium CPUs, or a 150MHz or 166MHz Pentium/MMX processor. RAM options run from 16MB to 96MB, with the model tested having 32MB. The Solo 2300 can also be outfitted with either a dual scan or active matrix 12.1-inch screen. Hard disk sizes are optional as well, with disk sizes ranging from 1.0GB to 2.0GB. Standard features include a 256K SRAM Pipelined Burst L2 Cache, a Synaptics-made touchpad and a NeoMagic video chip set. When tested, the notebook performed near the top of computers in its class. Software ran smoothly and was easy to install, while video and sound performance were excellent. The unit comes equipped with an 85-key, full-sized Windows 95 keyboard that proved relatively easy to type on. In all, the only improvement to recommend is to add a combination floppy drive, CD-ROM drive to avoid the hassle of swapping drives.

Keydata International's $3,795 Keynote XP is based on a 200MHz Pentium MMX processor and includes a 2.1GB hard drive, 48MB of standard RAM, expandable to 80MB, a 16x CD-ROM drive, a 33.6-Kbps fax modem and a 13.3-inch active matrix display. The software bundle includes Lotus Smart Suite, which includes word processing and spreadsheet capabilities. The lithium-ion battery provides almost two hours of use. The Windows 95-compatible keyboard includes a Logitech touchpad. An LCD panel tracks battery strength and disk usage. The notebook is easy to use and the performance is good and the processor does not generate excessive heat. The screen provides excellent viewing and the system includes stereo speakers. This is a good value for the price and the system offers excellent performance.

Hitachi PC's $5,499 VisionBook Pro 7580 Pentium MMX-based notebook represents an excellent value and wins PC Portables' Best Buy designation.The product ships with an Intel Pentium MMX CPU running at 233MHz, a 3.2GB hard disk drive, a 20 speed CD-ROM drive, a 13.3-in XGA TFT display, an integrated U.S. Robotics 56K cellular-ready modem with x2 technology, a 10BaseT LAN port and 32MB of RAM, which is expandable to 144MB. The notebook weighs 7.9 lbs with the CD-ROM drive and measures 12.9-in by 1.7-in. The active matrix display is capable of 1024x768 SVGA graphics display and is bright and clear.
