How WP Systems are Meeting the PC Challenge
Article Abstract:
Word Processing (WP) manufacturers are meeting the challenge of microcomputer manufacturers' predictions of the demise of WP. Modulation of hardware is evident in the options available in video presentation, storage capacity, printers, and cut-sheet feeders. Besides standard WP functions, software applications functions such as sort-list and spelling dictionaries are available. Some WPs use operating systems that can run business and language programs. Better design, documentation, and screen prompts make WP easier. Communications capabilities allow the machines to interface with optical scanners, data bases, and other terminals. Vendor service offers training and various levels of maintenance. Charts showing significant data on stand-alone text editors are included.

Automation Outlook: It's Time to Take the 'Personal' out of Personal Computers
Article Abstract:
The market for personal computers used by management is expected to increase forty per cent by the end of 1986. By 1985 the number of installed units will be approximately 394,000. Companies must develop policies for the acquisition, budgeting and purchasing of microcomputers, for control over their use and integration into the office system, and for standards for hardware, software, and communications. All this is necessary to minimize duplication and ensure better application of information.

Clustered Systems: Configured for Productivity
Article Abstract:
Decentralized equipment leads to clustered equipment. Stand-alone text editing machines can be connected into a clustered configuration. Shared resources, open-ended design, lower cost per work station, and rapid communications are some of the benefits of this approach. A comparison chart compares major vendors with a feature list. Pictures of different products are provided with feature highlights. The major vendors and their products are reviewed.
