One of the dangers of office automation is the isolation in which it can wrap its proponents. Efficient message-forwarding eliminates conversation. Workers are removed from important contacts and informative grapevines. Computer users can become paper entrepreneurs rather than product entrepreneurs, dealing in symbols rather than the real world.

More control must be exerted over what information is processed. The business community is swamped every working day with tremendous volumes of processed paperwork. Someone must be designated to evaluate the worth of much of this information: to filter, analyze, and organize it. Such a person is designated as a 'gatekeeper.'
