IBM Unveils High-Speed Memory Chip Using New Circuit Design Concepts
Article Abstract:
IBM has developed an experimental 64k-bit chip which has an unprecedented access speed of sixteen to twenty-nine seconds. The chip utilizes a self-timing sense amplifier, improved address buffering, and a reduced number of clocks to achieve higher access times. The chip outputs data in sixteen-bit blocks rather than the standard eight-bit blocks, reducing the number of chips needed to achieve the standard sixteen or thirty-two bit word size of most computers. The 64k chip developed at IBM's T.J. Watson Research Center also utilizes a four device memory cell which is larger and faster than the standard single-device cell.
