In-House Printing Offers Many New Options
Article Abstract:
In-house printing devices are available from many vendors; a directory of vendors and their addresses is included. Dot-matrix printers are either impact printers or ink-jet printers that produce about 200 dots per inch; a new variety uses the thermal release ribbon that increases speed of operation and produces a consistent image density. Software available allows different font types to be made. Laser printers produce copy that looks like real typesetting from word processing files; resolution is 300 lines per inch. High-speed laser printers can image and print a document as consecutive pages. Electro-erosion printer create dense images on treated metallized paper for use as original art for graphic arts cameras. Digital typesetters offer a full range of type styles, high resolution and high output speed. The high cost of typesetters has spurred the introduction of software that turns personal computers into typesetting terminals. To compete with laser printers, traditional copiers are becoming more versatile; a photograph shows the Xerox 1090 Marathon copier. Eastman Kodak Co.'s Kodak Ekta print Electronic Publishing System and Hewlett-Packard's ThinkJet printer are shown in photographs. Products available for each type of printing device are included.
