Infini-D 4.0 and Ray Dream Studio 5
Article Abstract:
MetaCreations' $899 Infini-D 4.0 and $449 Ray Dream Studio 5 are both excellent 3D modeling tools that are well worth the upgrade prices of $199 and $99, respectively. While Infini-D is targeted at the film and television industries, Ray Dream is a general-purpose 3D application. Both sport significantly enhanced interfaces that include palettes which display the properties of the currently selected object. Infini-D boasts a first-rate Mesh Editor, a particle system for creating stunning animated effects and more sophisticated utilities for animation sequencing. Enhancements to Ray Dream include physics-based animation, surface deformations, vertex-based modeling and an extensive library of models. Ray Dream is a better choice for new and highly creative users, while Infini-D seems quicker and more stable.

New dimensions in VRML authoring
Article Abstract:
Caligari's $149 Pioneer and $495 Pioneer Pro lines of Web authoring software provide the best array of performance, VRML support, modelling features and ease of use in a comparison of six VRML software packages. Each Pioneer offering includes an integrated browser and uses simple drag-and-drop technology for establishing links and other functions. Pioneer provides a wide assortment of modelling utilities, including basic 3D primitives, freeform-object drawing, 3D extruding and Boolean operations. The Pioneer line also supports real-world dimensions and local storage of VRML data. Virtus' $159 3-D Website Builder 1.1 offers exporting of VRML models and numerous performance and ease of use advantages but requires that users download proprietary software in order to process third-party VRML models.

An evaluation of Fractal Design's $499 Painter 3.0 resulted in the application receiving a rating of five out of a possible five. It is praised for containing significant enhancements compared to earlier releases, such as the addition of a macro recording facility, along with support for animation and digital video editing. Users will appreciate the excellent way Painter 3.0 is able to emulate natural media and its outstanding image retouching features. Multimedia developers will, in particular, appreciate the addition of layers and animation, as well as the fact that the application is now available for Windows, Macs and Power Macs. Painter is an outstanding choice for users who want to create original artwork, although casual image retouching can be accommodated.
