Interchangeability issues resolved, rewritable DVD-RAMs ready for market
Article Abstract:
Rewritable DVD-RAM drives and discs that are interchangeable with DVD-ROM drives of other manufacturers will be available in Japan in 1998. The new devices will conform to v1.0 specifications set by the DVD Forum, a standard-setting group that issued the industry standards in 1997. The new DVD-RAM disc has a total recording capability of 5.2GB for both sides while the DVD-RAM drive is capable of reading audio CDs, CD-ROMs, rewritable CDs (CD-RWs), recordable CDs (CD-Rs) and other types of discs.

New developments kick Ricoh's recordable CD drives into gear
Article Abstract:
Ricoh Co Ltd introduces the MP7040 family of drives for both recordable and rewritable CDs. The MP7040 series features a 4x writing speed, an average access time of 120ms and 2MB data buffers. Available in three models, the drives employ Ricoh's latest technologies, including an analog front-end processor LSI, an advanced controller LSI and ultra-small pickup modules. The package also includes blank discs and software.
