Management Counsel: Telecommunications
Article Abstract:
The Wide Area Network (WAN) will be more prevalent in the 1980's and is similar to the Local Area Network (LAN). The WAN can connect different LAN systems in different countries or it can connect smaller computer systems, such as personal computers. Thus, the main role of WAN is to serve as a communications transport medium. The WAN can connect systems by use of satellites, cables or line services. Some cable companies are linking buildings together in one system in certain financial districts. WAN can connect computers to a central location through dedicated communication lines (voice-grade, wideband or digital) or dial-in lines. This process allows a company to spread out its terminals over a wider area.
